April Updates: April elections bring new faces!

Spring is officially here, and with it comes renewed energy, community action, a new council, and a lot happening around Fitchburg. Here are some important updates from your Alder’s desk:

Agricultural & Rural Affairs Listening Session (March 26)

On March 26, the Agricultural and Rural Affairs Committee hosted a community listening session at Four Winds Farm. Residents shared thoughtful input on issues like land use, rural development, and long-term sustainability.

Key takeaways from the session included:

  • Broad interest in preserving agricultural land while accommodating responsible growth

  • Concerns around fair farmland taxation policies

  • Emphasis on infrastructure needs in rural areas

These ideas will help guide future policies and planning decisions.

The Planning Committee also approved plans for a new auxiliary building at Four Winds Farm, part of Beo Mor Farm’s rural event venue. The approval includes conditions such as no live music in the new space, dark-sky compliant lighting, and matching building materials. Updates were also shared on the city’s well ordinance and other planning activities.

Leadership Update: Welcome Micah!

Following recent elections, we’re excited to welcome Micah LaDousa to the Agricultural and Rural Affairs Committee. Micah brings fresh energy, deep commitment to the community, and a strong focus on transparent, inclusive governance. We’re also happy to share that Micah is now serving on the Tree Advisory Committee, where his passion for sustainability and community engagement will be a great asset. We’re looking forward to the leadership and collaboration he’ll bring to both roles.

New Committee Assignments: Fire & EMS and CEDA

As part of the recent committee reshuffle, I’ll be stepping into new committee roles and shifting my focus to two areas that are critical to Fitchburg’s future:

  • Fire and EMS Committee: Dedicated to strengthening our public safety systems, ensuring our emergency services remain responsive, well-resourced, and prepared to meet the needs of a growing community.

  • CEDA (Community & Economic Development Authority): Focused on fostering smart, equitable economic development while supporting initiatives that benefit all Fitchburg residents.

These new assignments allow me to take a more targeted approach to some of our city’s most pressing priorities, especially public safety and emergency preparedness. I’m eager to support the incredible work of our departments, improve coordination across services, and help shape policies that ensure we’re ready for the challenges and opportunities ahead. To both of these committees, I will bring all of the knowledge and background garnered while serving on Rural & Ag and Tree Committees.

Police Station & Wheel Tax Updates

Discussions are ongoing around the proposed new police station, including funding plans, design progress, and community input.

Meanwhile, the proposed wheel tax, a potential funding source for infrastructure improvements, was passed in a vote of 5-4, a tie broken by the mayor. There were many passionate voices, both for and against, who shared feedback. Your voices are appreciated and play into every decisions I make on your behalf. While I voted no based on the feedback I received, the prior NO vote on the referendum, and my fundamental disagreement with a regressive tax, I was very on the fence and understand the council’s decision to approve. I will work hard to ensure that your tax dollars are spent wisely and in the best service to our community. We’ll share more information about both issues as things progress, including how residents can weigh in.

Thanks for staying engaged and informed. Your voice shapes our community, and I’m always here to listen, collaborate, and advocate on your behalf.

Let’s keep building a Fitchburg we can all be proud of.
